Detective Conan (Case Closed)
Detective Conan is a Gosho Aoyama-written and -illustrated detective manga series from Japan. Since January 1994, it has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday, a shōnen manga magazine published by Shogakukan. As of September 2022, its episodes have been collected into 102 tankōbon volumes. The English-language editions of Detective Conan from Funimation and Viz were retitled Case Closed due to rights issues around the term Detective Conan. The plot centers on Shinichi Kudo, a high school investigator who, while looking into a strange organization, was turned into a kid. Kudo then used this transformation to solve several crimes by pretending to be the father of his childhood best friend and other people.

Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and TMS Entertainment turned the manga into an anime television series, which debuted in January 1996. Animated feature films, original video animations, video games, audio disc releases, and live-action episodes are all products of the anime. In2003, Funimation obtained a license to show the anime series in North America under the name Case Closed, giving the characters Americanized names. After its Adult Swim debut, the anime was canceled because of its poor viewership.
Funimation started broadcasting the licensed episodes of Case Closed in March 2013, and Crunchyroll started simulcasting them in 2014. The first six Case Closed movies were also localized by Funimation, and the Lupin III crossover special, its feature sequel, and a few more recent movies, including Case Closed Episode One, were localized by Discotek Media. Viz Media, in the meantime, translated the manga using Funimation’s altered title and character names. The manga was translated into English by Shogakukan Asia, maintaining the Japanese titles and original synopsis.
As of 2021, the manga’s tankōbon volumes had sold over 250 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever. In the shōnen category, the manga won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2001. The anime version has garnered positive reviews and was listed among the top twenty in Animage’s polls from 1996 to 2001. Weekly rankings on anime television in Japan indicate that Case Closed ranked among the top six episodes. Critics have responded favorably to the plots and cases of both the manga and the anime. While the anime has been aired in 40 countries, the manga has only been distributed in 25.
Jimmy Kudo (Kudo Shinichi): Sherlock Holmes, a tortoiseshell cat, was the inspiration behind the notion that Shinichi Kudo would be transformed into a kid. According to Gosho Aoyama’s plan, the cat would provide the essential evidence required to solve the case—a function the now-adult Shinichi performs to aid others nearby in the inquiry. Shunsaku Kudo, a fictitious private detective, served as an inspiration for Shinichi. Aoyama disclosed that his editor had recommended naming him Doyle instead of Conan since the lead character in the anime series Future Boy Conan had the same name. Conan was the moniker the author stuck with because she thought it would surpass the Future Boy series. “There is always only one truth!” is Shinichi’s catchphrase, according to Aoyama. (真実はいつもひとつ!, Shinjitsu wa Itsumo Hitotsu!) was simultaneously incorporated into chapter 95 of the manga and considered by the scriptwriter for the anime version. The catchphrase “One Truth Prevails” is translated in the English localizations.
Ran Mouri is the daughter of private investigator Kogoro Mouri and attorney Eri Kisaki. Her main objective is to reconcile her parents, who split up when she was seven years old . Heiji Hattori (服部 平次 Hattori Heiji?) is an Osakan high school investigator in the manga and anime series investigator Conan. In the Funimation dub, he is referred to as Harley Hartwell. He is Kazuha Toyama’s childhood buddy and love interest. Heiji was once Shinichi Kudo’s detective competition; but, after learning Conan’s actual identity, the two became friends and frequently collaborated on cases. He was the first to figure out who Conan really was.
Kazuha Toyama: Kazuha Toyama (遠山 和葉 Tōyama Kazuha?) is a character in the manga and anime Detective Conan. She is also known as Kirsten Thomas in the Funimation version and Katrina Tolliver in the computer game Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation. She is Heiji Hattori’s love interest and a childhood buddy.
The hidden identity of the main character in the manga and anime series Magic Kaito, as well as a recurrent character in Detective Conan, is Kaito Kid: Kaitou Kid (〪盗キッド Kaitō Kiddo?, lit. Phantom Thief Kid).
